Imaginary Journeys

7:30 p.m.

Saturday, Sept. 29, 2018

The Chicago Gargoyle Brass and Organ Ensemble opens its 2018-2019 season by leading listeners on aural adventures through space, time, and fantasy with world-premiere performances of new works and arrangements commissioned by the novel ensemble of brass quintet and pipe organ. The concert’s namesake work, Mark Lathan’s Imaginary Journeys, is a rocket-propelled interstellar experience inspired by recent astronomical discoveries. Listeners will hear Igor Stravinsky’s Suite from The Firebird, an evocation of Russian fairy tales, like it’s never been heard before. A suite from English Baroque composer Henry Purcell’s Come Ye Sons of Arts, arranged for brass and organ, conjures the royal court of Queen Mary II.
